The new, stricter standard concerning fire protection in railway construction is mandatory from 2016. swissplast® now offers thermoformed components according to EN45545-2 with a maximum dimension of currently 3000mmx1500mm. The components meet the high requirements for the interior, even overhead.
The new standard and your requirements
The interiors of rail vehicles are admittedly critical in assessing the safety of rail passengers. In order to counter this risk, the new standard prescribes very precisely which components must be tested and how, and which limit values must be observed. The standard places particularly high demands on overhead components. swissplast® can even comply with the limit values for these components.
New possibilities with potential
The new ABS-based material opens up many possibilities. Components such as luggage racks, ceiling panels and the like can now also be designed as thermoformed components. In contrast to laminated GRP parts, the use of this technology offers great potential for savings, both in terms of price and ecology. By substituting GRP or sheet metal, a relevant weight reduction can be achieved. In addition, fewer limits can be imposed on product design.

Further
The EN 45545-2 standard specifies R classes for defined applications. Depending on the use of the rail vehicle, the risk level HL of 1-3 is defined. For each R-Class, the limit value for the tests required per class is specified for each HL level. The material used by swissplast® is approved for classes R1/R2 to HL2.
Possible components R1/R2:
- instrument panels
- Ventilation parts
- interior linings
Vehicles up to HL2
- All surface vehicles
- accompanied and driverless systems
1- or 2-story vehicles for underground routing with lateral evacuation possibility
